Wereys in cup semi action
We headed up to Sutton Coldfield for our rearranged semi-final on Sunday 17 March in the team bus full of hope that we could win our way through to the finals at Lee Valley at the end of April. We knew we had a tough match ahead of us with Sutton having some very good players, but we felt that we had an equally good squad.
We had a good warm up and felt ready at the start of the game (once the umpires decided to join us). The game started at a good pace and Sutton put us under a lot of pressure in the first ten to fifteen minutes. We defended a few short corners and Chris made a number of saves in goal but we conceded when we couldn’t close down a Sutton attack to be down 0-1.
We continued to try and impose our game and gradually started to make inroads into their circle. We were awarded our only short corner of the game which was a right slip to Tam who had a great shot at goal which sadly hit Lucy on the line. At half time we went in 0-1 down.
Wereys started the second half really strongly and made attack after attack which we couldn’t quite convert. We narrowly missed some great crosses from the right with Heidi getting into some great positions. Mitch made some good space but couldn’t get on the end of a pass from Tam.
Eventually the pressure paid off and with a lovely transfer from left to right and in four passes with no opposition touching the ball Tam slid in to convert the move of the game to make the score 1-1. Sutton came back at us really strongly and despite some great defending with Angi clearing off the line we conceded a penalty stroke which was converted to make it 1-2.
Wereys pressed on but couldn’t equalise and with ten minutes to go Sutton sealed the win with a breakaway goal to make it 1-3. With Wereys tiring Sutton scored a fourth goal in the last minute to finish 4-1 winners.
It was a great performance against a very good team.
Thanks to our supporters for coming to watch.
