Wereys 7-a-side CP

Congratulations to Redland Wereys who claimed silver medal at the first England Hockey Over 50s Masters 7-a-side at Nottingham Hockey Centre.

In her match report Captain Cath says “Fourteen teams had entered and we were organised into two groups of four and two groups of three. We were in a pool with Dewsbury, Bedford and Bretforton.

“Our first match against Dewsbury was a bit of a shock to the system. They were really organised and fired up. We were in Sunday, lovely day, let’s have a nice time mode. Needless to say we were thrashed 4-0 which was a bit of a wake-up call. We changed the formation and moved personnel around and in the next games played MUCH better. We eventually found the goal (Mitch was definitely trying to avoid it!!) beating Bedford 2-0 and Bretforton 2-0. These results meant that we finished runners up in our section and put us into one of the finals groups with Canterbury, St Albans and Sevenoaks – all of these teams have been to the National Over 45s finals at some stage so it was a tough group.

“We dominated play in the first match against Canterbury but just couldn’t find the goal. We were very close on many occasions but Canterbury had one chance and put it away so it was a disappointing start losing 0-1. Our next match against St Albans was a much more positive performance and we put on a great display beating them 3-0. Sevenoaks had beaten Canterbury in their game so we knew that a win over Sevenoaks would give us a chance of topping the group on goal difference and we did just that with our best game beating them 2-0.

“Amazingly we were through to the final although we weren’t too happy to be playing Dewsbury again. This time we were fired up for the rematch and put up a great performance with an end to end game. They certainly didn’t have it as easy as they did in our group game against them. With three minutes to go at 0-0 Dewsbury were awarded a penalty corner and scored with a brilliantly taken lob into the top right hand corner. They were the best side at the tournament so, although disappointed that we didn’t win our first final, they were worthy winners.

Well done to the squad who worked really hard for a silver medal to finish NATIONAL O50  7-A-SIDE RUNNERS UP.”
