Wereys retain Avon title

Wereys Oct 2019

With a small squad we played the Avon Vets (O40s) tournament on Sunday 6 October at Clifton College. We had four games of 13 minutes each way – a lot of hockey for a small squad.

Our first match against Elderberries was a frustrating affair with Wereys having a lot of possession, but unable to find the goal until an offence in the circle resulted in a penalty stoke. Haysie stepped up to take the stroke and was sadly thwarted by the post, so the game finished 0-0.

The next game against Winscombe was our usual controlled and dominating game. There was some great linking play between Anji, CP, Haysie and Buffy up the right and we twice found the goal to win 2-0.

Having found our confidence we then put in another good performance against Team Turnbull and were settled with an early goal from Buffy from a short corner. We continued to press and were rewarded with another goal to lead 2-0 at half time. Team Turnbull kept playing and put our defence under pressure and scored a loopy (lucky!!) goal to make the end result 2-1.

We went into our last game against Keynsham needing to win 3-0 to secure the trophy and were settled with a lovely short corner strike by Mitch. We continued to press against a side that defended in their own half with all 11 players so found space difficult, but we managed to score another goal before half time to make it 2-0. The second half started well with Wereys trying to keep the ball wide to draw out the defence and, with persistent play, managed to score another two goals to finish 4-0 winners – enough to retain the trophy.

Well done to the squad.

Roll on the EH Cup which starts next month.
