Wereys beat Bath Buccs to progress to quarter finals

Our frost affected match against Team Bath due to be played on 19th January was rearranged to 28th January on an equally cold evening.

With traffic, parking and forgetfulness (courtesy of Heidi) affecting the gathering of the team, our preparation for this match was less than organised and Bath tested us severely in the first ten minutes or so. We defended stoutly and eventually gathered our composure to settle into some great attacking play. We had a couple of chances which were either saved by their GK or just missed the goal. We attacked very strongly up the right with Lucy linking well with Buffy, Haysie and Sniffer and a cross into the circle from Haysie was converted brilliantly by Heidi on the left post. The goal really lifted us and we continued to press without success to finish 1-0 at half time.

The second half was a similarly even battle, with both teams putting some good moves together. We recognised that our left was fairly open so we started to use Anji and Heidi more and had a lot of success penetrating the Bath circle. This resulted in a great move from our half involving Haysie, Buffy and was finished off with a thundering shot from Mitch to make the score 2-0. This settled us a lot and we played some lovely free flowing hockey, switching the ball well to use both sides of the pitch. We had a few more chances to extend our lead without success. Bath continued to press and put our defence under a bit of pressure towards the end of the second half and Chris was called into action to save us a couple of times.

When the final whistle went it was safe to say we were elated at beating Bath so convincingly. It was a great team performance and thanks go to JB for umpiring so well, Jan for managing the subbing, the squad members who didn’t play but supported from the bench and the supporters who braved a cold night to cheer us on. Well done Team Wereys.

The next round is due to be played on 16th Feb away to Solihull.
