Goaltastic for Under 12s at Avon Festival

Published by on

We had a minimal squad for the February Avon League festival, but the team worked their socks off to remain undefeated against a couple of strong sides.

We started slowly against Somerset Gryphons (think a couple of our players were still thinking they were asleep) and despite dominating play and creating numerous chances, we couldn’t score. Emily got into some great positions but couldn’t quite find the goal and their goalkeeper made some very good saves. Jake and Amelia linked very well together and Tom, who was itching to try out his new kit, didn’t touch the ball in goal. The final score was a slightly disappointing 0-0.

A couple of positional changes were made in the next game against Old Bristolians, with Theo moving to play in the centre of midfield, which made a massive difference to our distribution. The team started to put some great passes together and kept their structure very well. We attacked on many occasions but were unable to score initially. Jake and Neve had the defence totally organised to make it a comfortable watch for the spectators. Finally, our domination told and Emily managed to find the goal twice to make the final score 2-0. Again, Tom didn’t touch the ball.

Our next game against Keynsham was a complete domination. The team play was a dream to watch with wave after wave of attack. Emily was on fire in this match and scored 5 goals, Gus scored 2 goals with cracking shots and Theo got the last goal to make it a very convincing 8-0 win. Yet again, Tom didn’t touch the ball in goal.

Our last game against North Somerset was always going to be a hard match. They had a couple of skilful boys, who had dominated their games, so we knew we had to play our best hockey and we knew Tom was going to get involved this time.

The game started evenly with both teams playing some good hockey. Once again Emily showed her determination in front of goal to slot away the first goal – 1-0 Redland. N Somerset put us under pressure and Tom made some great saves to keep them out, but when we didn’t clear from defence they punished us with an equalizer – 1-1. We continued to attack with some good interchanging passing and again Emily put the ball away – 2-1 Redland. N Somerset attacked again and despite a great effort from everyone we couldn’t prevent an equalizer to make the final score 2-2.

This was a great performance from a small squad with fantastic effort, commitment and determination.

Well done to all involved
