Wereys in Round 1 England Hockey Cup

1 December 2024: Last weekend, in miserable wet and windy conditions, the Super Wereys O55s braved the elements and hosted regular oppo Bretforton in the EH Tier 1 Championships. Missing several key players, and with some folks playing out of position, the squad struggled to gel, retain possession of the ball, and get control of the game. Unfortunately, they conceded a goal shortly before half time. However, Wereys rallied in the second half, showed more patience on the ball and started to build creative play out from defence, coming close to the mark on several occasions. Sadly, Bretforton scored twice in quick succession, but Wereys didn’t give up and eventually their resilience was rewarded with a goal through Petra in the final minute. A 3-1 defeat sees the Wereys O55s now go into the Tier 2 competition.
This weekend then saw the Wereys O45s (pictured) start their campaign in the EH Championships. Hampered by poor availability, illness and injuries, a bare 11 ventured out to face local rivals Bath Buccs. Seemingly with the odds stacked against them, a tough and tiring game was anticipated. The strategy was to just enjoy it and give their very best. But my word, what a thrilling game it was, with end-to-end action! Interesting choice when the oppo win the toss but don’t take first push back…was it a sign? Wereys consequently started strongly and to their surprise opened the scoring within five minutes through Nicky. A small lapse in concentration allowed Buccs back into the game with a well-worked goal, but Nicky bagged a second just before half time.
Buoyed by the 2-1 advantage, the second half saw Wereys step up another gear. Strong defending from Anji, Mainie, Tracy and Terri, well marshalled by Chris in goal, denied Buccs any opportunity to add to their tally. Lucy, Buffy, and new (returning) recruit Hannah worked tirelessly in midfield to break down play and distribute clinically to the forwards. Nicky, Elaine, and super speedy newbie Briony just created mayhem around the D. It was only a question of time before Wereys found the net again. After earning a penalty corner, Lucy’s initial strike was well saved but only as far as Briony on the right post to tap in a well deserved goal. Not yet done, Wereys continued to apply pressure, Buccs were clearly rattled, and some more great build up play all the way from the back gifted Buffy with the fourth goal of the game. The last 10 mins with tired legs, game management kicked in, and Wereys showed great discipline, keeping possession whilst running down the clock.
Final score 4-1, what a game, what a result! The team play was simply awesome and beautiful to watch, everyone worked their socks off (or in Hannah’s case her astros off)! Really well played all.
