Undefeated but no trophy this year for Wereys O40s

28 September 2025: The Wereys squad rocked up to the annual O40s Avon Tournament ready to defend their 2024 title, but with only four teams this year it was going to be a closely fought competition.

Losing one player to injury the night before and another player not showing up meant Wereys were down to the bare 11. Not ideal for tournament hockey on a slightly warm September Sunday!

However they started brightly and polished off Firecrackers with a 3-0 win in the opening game. The goals coming from Kate with a close range tap in. A cracking ball into the D from Heidi found Nat’s stick perfectly angled to deflect past the Firecrackers keeper. Finally, Charli rounded off the scoring with a penalty corner goal.

Next up Wereys faced a strong Winscombe side, early on Flo delivered a sublime deflection into the roof of the net from Nat’s right wing cross. Nat then found herself again on the scoresheet converting with an excellent reverse stick strike. Sadly, Wereys conceded two very well struck goals in the second half thus ending the match with a 2-2 draw.

Unfortunately Wereys were down to 10 players in the final match against City of Bath. Aching muscles and tiredness were creeping in and despite their best efforts and awesome work rate they couldn’t find the required goal to retain the trophy. The game ended 0-0 meaning Wereys were the runners-up by just one point.

As always a fantastic day of masters hockey, roll on next year!
