Wereys vs Wales O55s – great game, good fun

31 May 2026: A Wereys collective travelled to Gloucester to provide the Welsh O55s squad with a valuable friendly training match ahead of their upcoming international tournaments. Featuring a core of loyal Wereys stalwarts, some familiar former (and younger) faces, and a couple of guest players (including one local rival), the team produced an outstanding display of flowing, high-quality hockey.
From the first whistle, Wereys put Wales under pressure and opened the scoring early from a penalty corner, with Abi expertly slotting home a deft flick from the left side. Soon after, another penalty corner gave Carol the chance to tap in from close range, sending the Wereys into half-time with a deserved 2–0 lead.
A brief lapse in concentration at the start of the second half, coupled with an unfortunate rebound off the post, handed Wales a simple opportunity to get on the scoresheet. Rather than denting the Wereys’ confidence, however, it spurred them on. Consequently, much of the second half was played around the Welsh D, with seemingly everyone eager to claim a moment of glory.
A crunching stick tackle on Jo right in front of goal resulted in a penalty stroke, which debutant Werey Chicken calmly converted. Not long afterwards, Netty unleashed a superb strike from the top of the D capitalising on the umpire’s advantage. Jules then set up Chicken for her second goal of the match, finishing off a beautifully constructed move that started deep in defence – Anji was quick to claim full credit for the assist, assist, assist! Final score: Wereys 5 – Wales 1.
A fantastic day out, some wonderful hockey, and a shining example of what masters hockey is all about: competitive spirit, teamwork, friendship, and plenty of fun.
