Wereys regain Avon title

Published by Terri D on

2 October 2023: The Wereys earned their title back in the Avon O40s tournament. Fielding a slightly different squad this year, Wereys welcomed in some new (and younger!) players to compete for the bragging rights in this local masters tournament. With only 20 minute games, the objective was to score goals and my golly we did!

Wereys started very strongly with an incredible 7-0 win over Old Bristolians, followed by a not so impressive 1-1 draw versus Elderberries, swiftly followed two more wins; 2-0 over Keynsham and 4-0 over Winscombe. That left the defending champions Clifton Team Turnball in the last game to play for the title. Wereys went out determined, and were soon 1-0 up, only for Clifton to level a few minutes later, but just before half time Netty fired a monster shot into the top of the goal. So with 10 minutes to go, the Wereys’ tired legs dug deep and a penalty cover conversion by Mitch sealed the victory and the trophy was duly returned to the green army.

A fantastic day in the sunshine with some truly splendid hockey on display…roll on next year…
