Wereys victorious in O40s West cup final

28 April 2024: Following an emphatic 13-0 win over Keynsham and a closely fought penalty shootout against Newent, Wereys were through to the final of the West O40s cup.

Wereys faced Bretforton on neutral territory at Kings College, Taunton but having played Bretforton on many previous occasions, they knew this wasn’t going to be an easy match. The Wereys went out well prepared with a strong plan of action from manager Sheriden and an energetic warm up from Buffy. So no surprise they were on top of their game and pressurised the Bretforton defence from the off.  It was only a question of time before the first goal arrived – a little melee in the D finally slotted away by Nicky.

Wereys demonstrated intelligent passing, superb ball skills and robust tackling, the game flowed seamlessly with little threat to Chris in the Wereys’ goal. The second goal came after a series of short corners admirably defended by Bretforton, but eventually persistence paid off and Nicky bagged a second with a close range touch. 2-0 at half time and looking good!

As expected Bretforton came out fighting in the second half, and a lapse in the Wereys’ concentration saw the opposition pounce on a loose ball and pop it neatly into the back of the net. This fuelled the Wereys to step up a gear and the team were giving 100% effort across the entire pitch. An absolutely sublime long pass from Zoe found Nat in the D who slotted home the Wereys’ third goal from the narrowest of angles. Wereys continued to apply pressure in the Bretforton half and a nicely worked long corner gifted Summer with the fourth Wereys goal. Final score 4-1.

An impressive performance from the whole team who thoroughly deserve to be champions, such a shame there wasn’t a big trophy and champagne to celebrate with! And finally a big thank you to everyone that has contributed to the squad this season – players, umpires, managers and supporters from a very proud captain Anji.
