Wereys O55s reach national final to defend EH title

2 April 2023: Current EH cup holders Redland Wereys O55s eased into the 2023 final with a phenomenal 7-0 win over London’s Southgate Flutes. The squad of 15 were primed, prepared and itching to perform from the get-go, and delivered a truly outstanding performance.

Wereys applied pressure on Southgate from the start, with lovely flowing hockey, working creatively for each other off the ball, and utilising the angles to their advantage. The deadlock was broken after just nine minutes with a beautifully taken goal through Mandy Meier. Captain Cath Coombs searching for a sniff of the action up front, wiggled her way from defence into the D and set up Carol Holmes for the second goal. The first half was polished off with a third goal from a clearly, well-rehearsed penalty corner, slipped right, shot fired from Fi Pridham, and deftly deflected in by Jo Brooks Scully.

The second half required more of the same and Wereys provided it in spades. Four minutes in and Terri Davey made an attacking drive from right back, delivering an inch perfect pass to Sally Coleman who neatly popped the ball into the goal.  Wereys dominated the rest of the match, demonstrating strength, skill and determination across the pitch to maintain a clean sheet and increase their goal tally.  Several short corners were won furnishing Wereys with a further three goals through Elaine Basterfield, Mandy Meier and Cath Coombs.

A fantastic squad effort and a one very happy manager!  Wereys will now play Kettering in the final on 29th April at Lee Valley Hockey Centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
