Over 40s put in fine performance at Taunton festival

15 April 2023: The Wereys had a successful day in the sunshine at the West O40s festival in Taunton.

With some new faces and guests joining the team, the super squad of 13 put in an awesome performance and remained undefeated all day. In the first game v Yate, Wereys took their time to settle and were very unlucky not to have come away with a 1-0 victory. Frustratingly, the superbly taken goal by Sally was disallowed, deemed dangerous by the umpire. We begged to differ!

Second game v Bath Buccs was a well matched affair, also resulting in a 0-0 draw. Then long-standing rivals Bretforton came next, and a fine win for the Wereys. 2-0, first goal from a cracking short corner strike by Haysie, and the second a great rebound shot from Jamie. Yeovil & Sherborne next, and a 1-0 victory with a lovely goal from Briony.

Final match of the day was v Taunton Vale who had won all their games. So the Wereys decided to put an end to that winning streak, and with the help of outstanding goalkeeping from Chris, the game ended 0-0.

Wereys finished as runners up behind Taunton – a job well done! It was a brilliant day of competitive yet sociable masters hockey, very well organised by the West Hockey Association.
