Emphatic Cup win for Wereys O55s

3 December 2023: Wereys eased comfortably into the second round of the Over 55s Tier 1 England Hockey masters championships with an impressive 7-0 victory over Bretforton.

It might have a been a wet and chilly day but Wereys started the game brightly and took hold of the match from the push back. Just four minutes in, the legend (and captain) Cath found space to calmly saunter down the middle of the pitch and fire in a clinical shot from the top of the D. Simple give and go hockey created great opportunities for the Wereys attack and exposed gaps in Bretforton’s defence. No surprise, two further goals followed in quick succession from open play through Petra and Mandy. Then a penalty stroke beautifully converted by Sarah rewarded the Wereys with a 4-0 advantage going into the second half.

Wereys continued the game with excellent linking play, lots of possession, and timely tackling. Superb running work off the ball created space for the half backs to push up. This led to Terri shockingly finding herself at the top of the D, completely unchallenged, so she also claimed her place on the scoresheet with a clean direct strike. Bretforton raised a couple of attacks but Wereys’ defence stood firm and disciplined with Jan in goal, ensuring nothing was going in her net today.

In the final passage of play, Wereys earned a penalty corner, Cath slipped it left to Carol who swept it home for Wereys’ goal number six.  Two minutes later, another penalty corner awarded… well, the last routine worked so why not try it again?  Déjà vu, a second goal for Carol in identical fashion.

It was an all-round brilliant performance from the squad of 15 and a marvellous first round win. The Wereys O55s will play round two on 14th January, opposition to be confirmed.
